Overview of the Day:

Earlier this month, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer hosted a Town Hall meeting about the plans by Westhab, one of New York’s pre-eminent supportive and affordable housing providers,  to open a "Rapid Re-Housing Job Ready Transitional Housing Facility" on West 58th street in Mid-April for 150 working or job-ready men as part of the City's plan to replace the worst and most expensive of the City's shelter system with state of the art full service facilities as detailed in "Turning the Tide on Homelessness".  

Many in the audience offered remarks in support of the project, some expressing a desire to make this a "model program" but many others spoke about safety concerns and a potentially negative impact on local businesses and the community's quality of life.

This seminar will be look at how to reconcile our progressive ideals about hospitality to the stranger with the concrete reality of siting housing and shelters in our neighborhoods. We will explore strategies and frameworks for addressing NIMBY (Not in my backyard) which is a common occurrence in communities in every part of New York and particularly prevalent in New York City as they place shelters. In addition, we will also have a review our state and federal budgets to see how they can give higher priority to providing for people’s needs including affordable housing.
